February 23, 2017

On Thursday evening February 23 at 1733 hours (5:33 pm), units were dispatched for a house fire in the 1900 block of South Main Street. First arriving units encountered a rapidly advancing fire in a two story single family house. The fire had already broken through the roof. After a brief search of the area it was learned that no one was at home. An interior attack was made but had to be abandon after a while due to deteriorating fire conditions and questionable integrity of the structure. A defensive attack was then made along with the deployment of the aerial stream from Frederick Tower 23. The fire was brought under control at approximately 1930 hours (7:30 pm). No civilians were injured, however two firefighters were taken to the hospital for checkups after possible over exertion. The house was a total loss. A mother and two teenage children were displaced and are being assisted by family. Units cleared the scene at 2220 hours (10:22 pm).

The origin and cause of the fire are being investigated by the Frederick County Fire Marshal's Office.

Units responded from Mount Airy, Lisbon, Damascus, New Market, Green Valley, Urbana, Laytonsville, Winfield, and Frederick DFRS, bringing approximately 20 pieces of apparatus and 60 personnel to the scene.
