Crews Assist on Basement Fire in Lisbon

By Chief Ivan Browning
December 27, 2009

On Sunday, December 27, 2009 at approximately 1500 hours (3:00 pm), Engine 12, Engine Tanker 14, Rescue 1 and Medic 18 were dispatched mutual aid to Howard County for a basement fire in the 17400 block of Frederick Road. Howard County Engine 44 (Lisbon) arrived on the scene with smoke showing from a 1 story rancher style house and initiated fire attack. The home was approximately 600 feet off the roadway.

The crew from Engine 12 arrived on scene and reported to the house where they were assigned to assist with ventilation. They then reported to the basement to assist with extinguishment and overhaul. Engine Tanker 14 arrived and picked-up the supply line at the end of the driveway layed by Engine 44. Rescue 1 crew was assigned to the basement to coordinate overhaul and ventilation activities. The home only had a single interior stairwell to enter the basement and provided a challenge to crews attempting to ventilate. Overhaul of the fire area was completed and crews exited awaiting the arrival of fire investigators. All crews reported to rehab that Medic 18 had set-up at the front of the building.

Crews operated at the scene for approximately two and a half hours before being released. The origin and cause of the fire is under investigation.

Units: Engine 12, Engine Tanker 14, Rescue 1, Medic 18
