MAVFC Provides Continuous Service Through Major Snow Storms

February 9, 2010
With the first major snows of 2010 hammering the State of Maryland, the volunteers and paid personnel of the MAVFC stepped up to make sure that emergency services would be provided to the community.
From the time that the first storm started on Friday morning February 5, until Sunday moning February 7, and then again from Tuesday morning February 9, through Thursday February 11, many personnel were staffing the station, prepared to provide any emergency service requested. In addition to standing by at the station, personnel performed a variety of duties such as keeping the lot reasonably free of snow so equipment could respond, keeping the equipment ready for response and braving the snow to go out and clean snow from around fire hydants to make them accesiible should they be needed. Each call proved to be a difficult task due to the heavy snows and limited access.
Personnel were constantly updated with information on conditions conerning the storm, from the Carroll County Emergency Operations Center, the Maryland Emergency Management Agency and the National Weather Service. Plow crews from Carroll and Frederick Counties used the station for rest periods, food, and restroom facilities. Police officers were also provided space to conduct their business as well as to rest, eat, and relax as possible.
After the storm came to an end, Mount Airy had an unofficial measurment of 28.5 inches of snow from the weekend storm, and 22.5 inches from the mid week storm.
