January's monthly training took a turn from typical operational based drills to a history lesson by none other than our member C. Oscar Baker. With 70 years of service to the citizens of Mount Airy, Carroll County and the State of Maryland, Oscar has a broad knowledge base of the fire service.

The purpose of the drill was to go over the origins and timeline of the Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Company, incorporating many facts that are unknown to a lot of our active members both young and old. Oscar opened up by reading minutes from the company's first year in 1926, pointing out the way meetings were held, what apparatus and property were purchased and how involved members were at the time.

The evening went on looking at major fires that occurred in town and throughout the region, members such as first President Asa Watkins and Chief Herman Beck, parades and carnival work and numerous other facets of the fire company that make us what we are today.

It was a great historical learning experience for all that attended!
