On September 9 at 2238 hours (10:38 pm) units from the Mount Airy and New Market Fire Companies were dispatched for a dryer on fire in the 1000 block of Collindale Avenue in the town of Mount Airy. Engine 12 arrived to find a townhouse with smoke visible from the front door. Occupants of the house had evacuated to the exterior. The assignment was upgraded to a box alarm at this point. Crews stretched a 1 3/4" line to the basement laundry area where they found the clothes dryer fire essentially out, and completed extinguishment that had been initiated by the residential sprinkler. Only one sprinkler head activated and contained the fire to the dryer. Crews ventilated the structure and no extension was found. Units cleared in less than an hour.
