On July 6, at 2135 hours, a MAVFC member was heading home from the Mount Airy Fire Station when he discovered smoke coming from a 2-unit apartment building in the 300 block of North Main Street. He immediately returned to the fire station and reported the fire. E12 responded immediately and found a fire on the first floor of the building and requested a box alarm assignment. E12's crew quickly attacked the fire and contained it to a corner area of the basement and first floor. Overhaul was extensive and time consuming to determine that there were no hot spots to rekindle. Fire damage was limited to the basement and first floor, but the heat and smoke damage went throughout the structure. The smoke alarms in the building activated, however, there was no one living in the structure at this time.

The origin and cause investigation is being done by the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office.

Units from Mount Airy, Lisbon, Damascus, Urbana, and New Market responded to the call with approximately 10 units and 35 personnel.
