Members and staff of the MAVFC attended the 100th birthday party for our longest tenured member, C. Oscar Baker. The staff and residents at Lorien Assisted Living, joined in for a very enjoyable celebration. Oscar's family attended including his sons and their spouses, grandchildren and great grandchildren. A very touching service was conducted by retired service personnel from the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps. detailing Oscar's military experiences. Oscar is an Army veteran and was wounded in Europe during WWII. Rick Baker from the MAVFC provided a history of Oscar's service to the MAVFC as well as to Carroll County and the State of Maryland fire service. Oscar has served as President of the MAVFC, twice President of the Carroll County Volunteer Firemen's Association (now CCVESA), and President of the Maryland State Firemen's Association. He was instrumental in starting the first ambulance service in Mount Airy, the purchase of the carnival grounds, and the obtaining of the first radios for the fire apparatus. Oscar served as the chair for fundraising for the new fire station as well as a driving force in many other endeavors of the MAVFC. All of us at the MAVFC wish Oscar the very best on his 100th Birthday. |
