Impending Storm Preparations

Whenever storms are predicted, particularly ones that may trigger tornados or strong winds, homeowners should be sure to make necessary preparations and follow safety guidelines.

Stay informed of developing weather conditions.

Prepare an emergency kit including flashlights, batteries, drinking water, medications, and snacks.

Charge all devices ahead of time in case of power outage. Keep charging cords with the device if possible.

Secure all outdoor items such as trash cans, porch furniture, decorations, that could become hazardous or airborne in strong winds.

Use portable generators safely. Keep them outside away from windows, doors, and vent openings to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.

If driving, avoid driving through flooded roadways. "Turn around, don't drown"

Report any emergencies immediately, Dial 911.

If very strong winds or a tornado should approach, get to a safe shelter such as an interior stairwell or basement. If caught outside, get to a low area and lay down. Beware not to occupy a drainage area that could become flooded very quickly.

Your local firefighters are ready to respond if needed. However, the best protection is preparation. Remember to check on family members and neighbors who are elderly or may need assistance.
