On April 16 at 1914 hours (7:14 pm), units from the Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Company were dispatched for a garage fire in the 1900 block of Gillis Falls Road. Chief 1 arrived on scene to find a 2-story detached garage with fire showing from the second floor. Engine 12 arrived and stretched a hose line into the attic to attack the fire. Truck 1 provided ladder, ventilation, and overhaul support. Tanker 1 provided water supply. Rescue 1, Utility 1, Medic 19 and 18 also responded. Winfield CF14-1 was assigned as the attic division supervisor. Chief 1 held command of the incident.

The fire was determined to be accidental by the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal, an unspecified electrical failure. Units operated for approximately two and a half hours before returning to service to take in a few more additional runs.
