| On May 5 at 6:33 pm, units from the Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Company and surrounding areas were dispatched for a building fire in the 7100 Block of Watersville Road. Chief 1 and Engine 12 arrived on scene to find a 1-story church with basement, with fire showing from the roof. Crews were met with a well-advanced and fast-moving attic fire. Engine 12 stretched a line in the front door and began opening up the ceiling and attacking the fire from the first floor. Truck 1 provided assistance with opening up inside and venting the roof. Tower 12 was able to get a good position and provide an aerial steam from over top of the building which assisted greatly in extinguishment. The building was unoccupied at the time of the fire. There were no civilian or firefighter injuries. The fire is under investigation by the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal. The building sustained major damage and is uninhabitable. Units operated for approximately 4 hours before returning to service. |
