| On May 12 at 2054 hours, (8:54 pm), units from the Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Company were dispatched on Box 14-2 for a barn fire in the area of Ridge Road and Braddock Road. First arriving units found a 150' x 50' barn with fire throughout. The barn was full of hay and straw and required extensive efforts for extinguishment and overhaul. Engine 12 assisted with fire control and overhaul. Truck 1 operated as the first due truck and provided an aerial master stream. Tanker 1 assisted with water supply and provided multiple tanks of water. Chief 1 held command of the incident with assistance from Winfield Chief 14-2.
There were no civilian or firefighter injuries. Units operated for approximately 4.5 hours before returning to service. Debris from this fire will smolder for some time due to the amount of hay and straw that was stored in the barn. The fire is being investigated by the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office for origin and cause.
UPDATE 5/13, Units from Winfield, Lisbon, and Mount Airy returned to the scene frequently throughout the day and into the evening putting more water on the large amount of smoldering hay and straw. Smoke from the debris blanketed the Taylorsville area for much of the day and evening until the arrival of some rain showers which helped to mitigate the problem. |
