By Chief Ivan Browning
February 20, 2012

On February 20, at approximately 2030 hours (8:30 pm), Carroll County 911 dispatched Box Alarm 01-09 for a kitchen fire in the 5400 block of Ridge Road. Chief 1 arrived on scene in moments with smoke in the house and later confirmed a kitchen fire with extension. All occupants made it out of the home safely due to the action of a young child who alerted his parents to the fire.

Chief 1 established command and Engine 12 crew strecthed an attack line and began fire attack operations. Engine 142 (Winfield) supplied water to Engine 12 and backed-up their crew with an additional handline. Rescue 1 crew searched the structure and secured the utilities before assisting with checking for fire extension and ventilation

Water supply was set-up using Tanker 1 as a nurse tanker on the scene. Other tankers and engines prepared to use portable folding tanks and rural water supply locations for additional water if needed.

The fire was contained to the kitchen area with some smoke damage to the rest of the house. The State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the incident and the Red Cross was called to assist the occupants as needed. One civilian recieved minor burns attempting to extinguish the fire.

Units operated on the scene for over an hour.
