By Assistant Chief Ivan Browning
January 25, 2006
On January 25 at approximately 1338 hours, Rescue Squad 1 was dispatched mutual aid to Montgomery County for a vehicle collision with injuries in the 29000 block of Ridge Rd. (Md. Route 27). While enroute, Command advised RS 1 to assist with the patient located in the pick-up truck on the north side of the collision. Upon arrival, RS 1, determined the patient to be trapped in the drivers seat area of the pick-up truck. While the crew from Montgomery Medic 139 assessed the patient, the Squad crew stabilized the pick-up truck which had significant front-end damage. The driver was then covered with a protective blanket and the AMKUS hydraulic rescue tool used to spread the driver's door open. This was accomplished very quickly and allowed the crews from Medic 139 and Medic 19 to access, fully immobilize, and remove the patient.
After the patient was removed from the pick-up truck, assistance in the extrication of a patient still trapped in the small car was rendered. The Squad was repositioned and again the AMKUS Spreader was used to open the area around the drivers compartment to access the patient.
Both patients were taken to local trauma centers for evaulation and treatment, one via helicopter and one via land transport unit.
