By Assistant Chief Ivan Browning
July 30, 2006

On July 24, 2006 at 0216 hours MAVFC was dispatched for a motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Route 27 (Ridge Rd.) and Gillis Falls Road. Officers from the Carroll County Sheriffs Department arrived on the scene almost immediately advising that a subject was trapped in the vehicle. With this information, Carroll County 911 upgraded the call to a motor vehicle collision with rescue. Chief 1-2 was first on the scene with a single car that had run off the road, struck a telephone pole and then collided with a traffic light pole head-on. Command was established and it was confirmed that there was one subject pinned in the vehicle. A MEDEVAC helicopter was requested to the scene. Medic 18 arrived and began patient care on the subject who had been jolted into the rear passenger seats from the drivers seat during the collision. The patient had his feet pinned underneath the dash area. Squad 1 arrived shortly thereafter and under the direction of Chief Lowman began extrication of the patient. They used the extrication tools to remove the roof of the vehicle and displace the dash area to access the patients feet. The extrication had to be performed very carefully as not to further injure the patients lower legs. Engine 12 arrived and provided a handline for fire protection while E-141 (Winfield) set-up a landing site for the Maryland State Police Helicopter MEDEVAC close to the scene. Total extrication time from the time of dispatch was 24 minutes. The patient was removed from the vehicle and evaluated further by paramedics. The patient was flown to the Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. Units cleared at approx 0300 hours.

Units: Paramedic 18, Squad 1, Engine 12, Chief 1-2

Mutual Aid: Engine 141 (Winfield), MD State Police Aviation
